P90X flew into the spotlight over a decade before I ever considered using it, and long before Instagram provided a platform for daily #fitspo updates. I decided to research home workouts, inspired by Instagrammer Kayla Itsines, who has her own at-home program series through an app called Sweat. With the weather getting drearier by the day, I finally stopped kidding myself that I’d get back into the habit. I thought, what am I going to do? I decided to try something new.īy the time I thought about P90X, it had been a couple of months since I had gone to the gym on any sort of regular basis. And then I started feeling pretty crummy.

Tired of the cold and the rain, I quit going to the gym within a couple of months of moving north. And colder and wetter, too, because in Chicago the slippery slope into winter begins in September. When summer ended, I moved home to Chicago-and to a new neighborhood, farther north than I had lived before. The senior citizens liked having me around and often wanted to chit-chat. The Planet Fitness was gloriously empty during the day when everyone but me and the retirees were at work.

I was spending a couple of months at my partner’s house in South Carolina and I drove his old Ford Explorer five minutes to the local Planet Fitness each day. Of course, the fact that I enjoyed the results of weightlifting wasn’t always a strong enough incentive for me to start back up after a hiatus. Because I bounced between dedicated gym attendance and none at all, I failed to ever get very strong, but I liked it while I did it.

In 2014, my sister taught me how to lift weights, and I adopted weightlifting as my primary stress reliever and exercise of choice (that and Zumba classes!).
